KRI Nanggala-402 lost contact with its base in Surabaya, East Java on Wednesday, April 21, soon after it requested permission to dive during a live torpedo drill in the Java Sea.

A search by the Indonesian Navy, with the aid of vessels and other units from the United States and Singaporean navies as well as those of other nations, ended up empty handed, leading the Indonesian Navy to declare the the submarine to be in a sub-sunk, then sinking phase.
