Abu Sayyaf captured MK as he was fishing with AD, and acquaintances AKM and AR last Januar in waters off the Malaysian state of Sabah last January.

The quartet avoided the fate of 32-year old La Ba’a, an Indonesian captive of Abu Sayyaf, who was killed in a botched rescue attempt by Filipino authorities in November 2020,. Abu Sayyaf captured La Ba’a in January 2020 as he was fishing off Lahad, Datu, Malaysia.
