Often, their busy schedule find Sutiono and other volunteers sneaking in an hour or two of sleep in the cemetery.
“If we can’t go home when we’re tired, then we sleep there [in the cemetery] while waiting for burial processions,” he said.
In a day, they bury several Covid-19 victims. The processions also take place in the evening or the wee hours.
In the beginning, Sutiono was a bit worried about getting infected as he buried those who died from suspected or confirmed Covid-19. But he felt safe after consulting with a team of doctors on how to protect himself from contracting the new coronavirus.
“First, maintain safety. The face must be covered tight. After the burial processions wash hands properly by using 70 percent alcohol. This is routinely done every day,” he said.
He said all the volunteers also get enough rest so they will not feel fatigued.
