JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council Jusuf Kalla said that mosques can help Indonesian society prosper through knowledge and the economy.

Countries that do not have strong knowledge and economy cannot establish a good civilization, the former Indonesian Vice President said during a webinar on July 8 about ‘Creating an Islamic Civilization through Mosques’.

"Mosques must help to enrich society. How can it do so? Through knowledge and the economy because together they form a civilization."

Mosques can assist in this regard.

Aside from its function as a house of prayer, it must also be able to manage, improve, and enhance the economy as well as the knowledge of society, said Jusuf Kalla. 

In regards knowledge, Jusuf expressed his appreciation for the presence of mosques in schools and universities. Its presence thus integrates knowledge with worship.

“We don’t enter a mosque only to pray and listen to sermons. It’s about improving our understanding and pushing mosques to move society forward and increase the number of worshippers,” said Jusuf.

In keeping with the motto of the Indonesian Mosque Council which is to create prosperity and be prosperous, Jusuf Kalla wants to create and ensure mosques can realize that vision.
