SURABAYA, KOMPAS.com – Police in East Java are searching for three women who uploaded a video of themselves dancing on the Suramadu Bridge connecting the city of Surabaya with the island of Madura.
“We are currently scrutinizing CCTV footage to determine the identities of those behind the video," police spokesman Achmad Faisol Amir said as he confirmed the trio are on their wanted list July 3. "Once we do so, we will make them apologize for their actions.”
“Stopping in the middle of the Suramadu bridge is a violation of traffic laws,” he said. “There are many signs on the bridge prohibiting traffic from stopping. We hope to make it clear that we do not tolerate anyone doing so.”
The bridge as stage
A TikTok account under the handle @naylaraisa2003 uploaded the video on Thursday, July 2.
The 17-second video showed the trio in yellow dresses and black hijabs moving to the rhythm of Bollywood tunes. Filled with joy and evidently without a care, the perpetrators danced on, oblivious to the traffic on the 5.4-kilometer bridge, which is known to be one of Indonesia's most photographed.
The video has been viewed over 20,000 times and received 4,405 comments on TikTok and Twitter. Not all of the observations are complimentary of the trio’s effort to gain viral fame.
“Tell your mom to go home before she gets hit by a truck [at the Suramadu Bridge],” commented @hesti_rya on Twitter after she uploaded the footage.
The trio are still at large. Their stunt is not the first of its kind on Suramadu Bridge. Traffic signs abound on the bridge prohibiting motorists from stopping and taking selfies or other pictures as this has been a recurring problem since the bridge's opening in 2009.
