70,000 Doses of China's Sinopharm Vaccine Distributed for Private Vaccination in Indonesia

Indonesia's pharmaceutical company Kimia Farma corporate secretary Ganti Winarno said more than 70,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine have been distributed to companies that have registered for Gotong Royong private vaccination scheme.

"More than 70,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine have been distributed to companies that will carry out the Gotong Royong vaccination. The allocation is based on the current availability of the vaccines," Ganti said in the covid-19.go.id website, Monday, May 31.

Kimia Farma is scheduled to receive 7.5 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine in stages under the Gotong Royong vaccination program. Apart from using the Sinopharm vaccine, the Gotong Royong private vaccination scheme will also use the Chinese-made CanSino vaccine.

Ganti emphasized Kimia Farma continued to support the success of independent vaccination, both in terms of facilities and infrastructure, including health and human resources.

"Kimia Farma is ready to assist the government in implementing this vaccination. We have collected the employees' data so that vaccinations can be carried out later,” Ganti said.

"We hope that the Gotong Royong vaccination program can help accelerate the herd immunity for 181.5 million Indonesians," Ganti added.

In a move to step up the Covid-19 jab drive, Indonesia gave the nod to a mutual assistance vaccine scheme in the country, allowing private companies to procure vaccines independently for their employees.

Indonesia has sent 2,000 oxygen tanks to India to combat its ongoing Covid-19 crisis, as the pandemic claimed more than 300 thousand lives out of nearly 28 million cases.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced that the oxygen was sent from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport last Friday. “[The shipment] is part of the 3400 oxygen tanks that we sent to India," said Airlangga, who also chairs the National Covid-19 Response and Economic Recovery Committee or KPC PEN on the Cabinet Secretariat website setkab.go.id Monday.

He added that they followed up a previous shipment of 1,400 oxygen tanks on May 10.
“The oxygen tanks reflect Indonesia’s commitment to aid a strategic partner like India. [The aid] is in line with President Joko Widodo’s order that the government has to move in unison to mitigate Covid-19 and recover the economy, and bolster multilateralism.”

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita pointed out that the Indonesian private sector contributed to the sending of the oxygen tanks, similar to the first shipment. “Let us pray that India can control [its surge of Covid-19 cases],” he said.

“We hope that we can learn the lessons from India’s Covid-19 crisis so that we may not become complacent and maintain discipline in practicing health protocols.”

India’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Manoj Kumar Bharti, expressed his gratitude for the aid sent by Indonesia. “We have helped more than 84 countries at the beginning of the [Covid-19 ] pandemic, and now we are recipients of aid,” he noted.

Jakarta's daily coronavirus cases begin to rebound again and create new infection clusters after the recent Idul Fitri holidays, according to corona.jakarta.go.id website.

Based on data released, new cases in Jakarta had risen “significantly” to 1,064 cases on Sunday, May 30, after the cases have slowed down for some time. The new cases brought the total Covid-19 cases in the capital to 429,333 with total deaths at 7,309 as of last Sunday, State News Antara reported.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto said that the increase in Covid-19 cases began to appear two weeks after this year's Idul Fitri holidays, which took place on May 13 and 14.

"The lesson from the previous long holidays was the number of Covid-19 cases would rise about four to five weeks after the holidays," said Airlangga on Thursday, May 27.

As of May 23, the country’s daily cases were recorded at around 5,000 cases per day. Half of the total active cases in Indonesia are on the island of Java, while a quarter of them are on the island of Sumatra. Five provinces with the highest number of Covid-19 in Indonesia include West Java, Jakarta, Papua, Central Java, and Riau.
