May 31, 2021, 06.07 PM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com -  Jakarta's daily coronavirus cases begin to rebound again and create new infection clusters after the recent Idul Fitri holidays, according to corona.jakarta.go.id website.

Based on data released, new cases in Jakarta had risen “significantly” to 1,064 cases on Sunday, May 30, after the cases have slowed down for some time.

The new cases brought the total Covid-19 cases in the capital to 429,333 with total deaths at 7,309 as of last Sunday, State News Antara reported.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto said that the increase in Covid-19 cases began to appear two weeks after this year's Idul Fitri holidays, which took place on May 13 and 14.

"The lesson from the previous long holidays was the number of Covid-19 cases would rise about four to five weeks after the holidays," said Airlangga on Thursday, May 27.

As of May 23, the country’s daily cases were recorded at around 5,000 cases per day. Half of the total active cases in Indonesia are on the island of Java, while a quarter of them are on the island of Sumatra. Five provinces with the highest number of Covid-19 in Indonesia include West Java, Jakarta, Papua, Central Java, and Riau.

"After the Eid holidays, we will continue to monitor the progress of the Covid-19 in the next two or three weeks and anticipate the situation through the extension of the Micro-scale restrictions or PPKM as well as tightening the travel requirements," said Airlangga.
