JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesian medical authorities are set to autopsy the remains of a Jakarta man who died less than 24 hours after taking AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine to determine if his demise is connected with the vaccine.
A 6.2 Richter scale earthquake struck off the East Java city of Blitar. The tremors kept people in the province on their toes, along with people from other provinces such as Central Java, Yogyakarta, Bali and even West Nusa Tenggara.
And President Joko Widodo sought to remain objective as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh urged him to mobilize global support for Palestine. This and more on Indonesia Highlights:
Indonesian Authorities to Autopsy Man Who Died After Receiving AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 Vaccine
The National Commission for Post Immunization Incidents or KIPI is set to autopsy the remains of 22 year-old Trio Fauqi Virdaus, a Jakarta resident who died hours after he was vaccinated with a Covid-19 vaccine from the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company.
KIPI head Hindra Irawan plans to carry out the procedure on Monday, May 24. “We will carry out the autopsy then, as we need to prepare the operating room as well as equipment such as reagents and other chemical reagents,” he said.
Hindra added that Trio is one of 30 people across Indonesia who died after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. “27 of the dead passed away after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine from Sinovac, while three died after taking the AstraZeneca vaccine,” he asserted.
Hindra maintained that the deaths are not caused by the vaccines. “10 of those who died contracted Covid-19, while 14 others died from heart disease. The remainder died of kidney failure, diabetes mellitus and hypertension.”
Hindra added that those who died after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine are also accounted for.
“The first known death after taking the AstraZeneca vaccine, 22 year-old [Trio Fauqi Virdaus] died after he felt vaccine side effects such as headaches and fevers,” he said.
“He refused to be hospitalized although he ran a temperature of 39 Celsius, then his condition deteriorated the next day and he died in a clinic.”
Hindra added that the second person who died after taking the AstraZeneca vaccine was a 60-year old motorcycle taxi driver who possibly died from pneumonia, while the third fatality was a 45 year-old from Ambon, Maluku Province whose Covid-19 was in a terminal stage.

6.2 Richter Scale Earthquake Strikes East Java, Other Indonesian Provinces
A 6.2 Richter scale earthquake has struck the city of Blitar in Indonesia’s East Java province on Friday, May 22. No casualties were reported in the disaster.
The Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency [BMKG] said the earthquake’s epicenter was 57 kilometers southeast of Blitar at a depth of 110 kilometers.
“The [Blitar] earthquake can be felt in East Java, and as far as [the provinces] of Central Java, Yogyakarta and Bali, as well as West Nusa Tenggara Province,” the agency announced.
BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center head Rahmat Triyono said the earthquake was of moderate strength. “
Active Tectonics, Geology and Earthquakes expert Gayatri Indah Marliyani from Gadjah Mada University’s Center for Disaster Studies backed the BMKG’s finds.
She added that the earthquake’s depth and substantial magnitude caused the phenomena and the following aftershocks to be felt across a wide area.
“In Yogyakarta, the earthquake can be felt for 10 seconds. In East Java, the earthquake damaged a number of buildings, and can potentially weaken their foundation,” Gayatri asserted.
The BMKG’s Rahmat assured that the earthquake will not cause a tsunami. “However, the scale of the earthquake is strong enough to shake walls and rattle windows as well as doors. The BMKG also detected two aftershocks measuring 3.1 and 2.9 Richter scales,” he asserted.
Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire, an area in the Indo-Pacific region that is vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanoes and other military disasters.

President Jokowi Maintains Indonesia’s Stance on Palestine in Reply to Hamas
President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has maintained Indonesia’s stance in the Palestinian crisis in reply to a letter by Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh pleading Jakarta to drum up support for Palestine.
“President Jokowi maintained Indonesia’s stance [in the Middle East crisis], namely condemning the eviction of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah district of East Jerusalem, and the use of violence towards Palestinian civilians at the al-Aqsa Mosque,” said Presidential spokesman Fadjroel Rahman.
“The President conveyed his stance in his statement on May 10. He has urged the UN Security Council to take action against Israeli human rights violations, and assured the Palestinian people of his constant support.”
Fadjroel added that Jokowi has reached out to the leaders of Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam to halt Israeli aggression in the Palestinian territories.
In a letter dated May 19, Haniyeh has urged Jokowi to drum up support for Palestine in the Arab, Islamic and international community to pressure Israel to stop its aggression in the Gaza Strip and halt the Jewish state from building Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.
