Heavy Machinery Needed to Evacuate Landslide Victims in Indonesia’s East Flores

Dozens of people were killed in the Indonesian region of East Nusa Tenggara after a landslide struck their homes in Nelelamadike village in the early hours of Sunday, April 4, an official confirmed.

East Flores deputy regent Agustinus Boli said survivors were trying to search the villagers who were buried in their homes. However, they were facing difficulty as no heavy equipment was available.

“We were informed by Nelelamadike village head Pius Sword Melai that dozens of residents were dead after their houses were buried [under dirt] but the villagers struggled to dig out as no heavy machinery was available,” Agus told Kompas.com on Sunday.

Agus has contacted the East Flores Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to evacuate the victims. He also called on other parties to help with heavy equipment.

The landslide was caused by heavy rains that began on Saturday. Besides the landslide, some areas were affected by a flood. At the time of publication, heavy rains and strong winds are still raging.
