BREAKING NEWS – Indonesian Badminton Team Withdraws From All England Open

KOMPAS.com – Indonesia was forced to withdraw from the 2021 All England Badminton tournament, after a passenger travelling on-board with the team's flight tested positive for Covid-19 there.

Indonesian badminton player Marcus Fernaldi Gideon broke the news on Thursday.

“Tonight we’re in shock to hear the news that we (indonesian players & officials) have to withdrawn [sic] from all England [Tournament] due to an anonymous passenger tested + for covid,” Marcus said in his Instagram account @marcusfernaldig.

The Indonesian Badminton Association or PBSI reiterated Marcus. “In accordance with the British government’s procedure, if airline passengers who are on the same flight with individuals who tested positive for Covid-19 must undergo a 10-day self-isolation period,” PBSI confirmed.

PBSI added that the Indonesian team is undergoing self-isolation at the Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre hotel until March 23, ruling them out for the rest of the All England tournament. However, PBSI confirmed that the Indonesian team is currently in good health.

The abrupt withdrawal of the Indonesian team is a major disappointment, as a number of players made it to the second round of the knockout stages of the tournament.

A number of them were scheduled to play later today. They include men’s singles player Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, and the pairs of Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti, dan Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

Other players who made it to the second round included Jonatan Christie, and the pairs of Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, as well as Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu.
