JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian National Police is heading for a showdown with the Islamic Defenders Front ( FPI), after a shootout between both sides on a toll road on the outskirts of Jakarta left six alleged members of the vigilante group dead.

Jakarta Police Gun Down 6 Alleged FPI Members on Outskirts of Capital

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police has taken its firmest action yet against the FPI, as officers from the regional police force shot dead six suspected members of the controversial vigilante organization in a toll road outside the capital on Monday, December 7.

“Investigators tailed a vehicle suspected of carrying 10 FPI members after they received a tip that [FPI head] Rizieq Shihab’s supporters will back him during his summons by the police,” said Jakarta Metropolitan Chief Inspector General Fadil Imran.

“The suspects…approached our men with harmful intent…and forced them to open fire in self-defense.” He added that the rest of the group escaped and are still at large.

Fadil also vowed to take stern actions against any parties who will try to obstruct the police during their investigations. He noted that the incident is related to FPI head Rizieq Shihab’s scheduled summons to the Jakarta Police for violating health protocols.

FPI secretary Munarman denied the group’s complicity in the incident.

Indonesia Receives 1.2 Million Doses of Covid-19 Vaccine from China’s Sinovac

The first shipment of Covid-19 vaccine from Chinese drug maker Sinovac has arrived in Indonesia on Sunday, December 6. President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo confirmed the vaccines’ arrival.

“This vaccine is produced by Sinovac and we have been testing it clinically since August 2020 at the offices of state-owned Bio Farma pharmaceutical company in Bandung, West Java,” Jokowi said.

“An additional shipment of 1.8 million doses of the vaccine will arrive in January 2021, followed by 45 million doses of the unprocessed vaccine that will be processed by Bio Farma later next year.” He added that the availability of vaccines can help prevent the spread of the Covid-19.

However, Jokowi reminded that the vaccine needs to be evaluated by the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency [BPOM] before it can be used for mass inoculation.

He also called on the public to comply with health protocols like washing hands, wearing masks, and practicing social distancing.

Indonesia’s Covid-19 Task Force Advise Against Year-End Holiday Travels

Indonesia’s Covid-19 Task Force head Doni Monardo has urged the public to reconsider their travel plans for the year-end Christmas and New Year’s holidays, even as the arrival of the country’s first coronavirus vaccines provided the country with its first breaks against the coronavirus.

“I advise the [Indonesian] public not to travel during the [Christmas and New Year’s] holidays, as the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency [BMKG] warned about the onset of extreme weather conditions over the next two or three weeks,” warned the former four-star general.

“The country still also has to contend with Covid-19, as the pandemic is still raging nationwide. The public should also beware about the possibility of crowds during the December 9 [regional elections], Christmas and New Year’s, among them family get-togethers during the latter occasions.”

The BMKG has warned about the possibility of heavy rainfall averaging more than 300 millimeters on Christmas and New Year’s last November.
