UNGARAN, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s Semarang regency in Central Java has been selected as one of the 47 locations of the Smart City initiatives, which aims to better develop the cities and regencies that offer tourist attractions.
Semarang regency was chosen by the Communication and Information Ministry that will assist in the preparation of master plans for the national priority tourism destinations and the new capital city project.
“The Smart City program aims to develop a better place to live for the people in regencies and cities in the tourism areas. Semarang regency is part of the Borobudur tourism areas,” said the ministry’s director of information application management Mariam Fatima Barata on Monday, September 6 in Semarang.

Semarang regency has several tourist destinations comprising natural and cultural attractions such as Rawa Pening Lake which is surrounded by mountains and Gedong Songo temple.
Improve the people’s welfare
Semarang regent Ngesti Nugraha expressed hope that the implementation of the smart city initiatives can bring benefits to the welfare of its residents. He called on the regional apparatus organization to work closely with the relevant agencies to implement the programs in line with the strategic plan.
“The apparatus is expected to synergize the program with the 2021-2026 mid-term regional development plan,” he said.
He went on to say that the implementation of the Smart City program will be monitored to improve public services and the welfare of the people.

“The implementation of the program facilitated by the Communication and Information Ministry should also affect the business sector so that it can boost a good investment climate,” he added.
Meanwhile, the acting head of the communication and information office of Semarang regency Alexander Gunawan said that the relevant apparatus have attended a technical guidance event focusing on the implementation of the Smart City program.
The two-day meeting, which was held both offline and online, aims to provide materials for the regional development based on the Smart City concept. “So the development process will be effective,” said Gunawan.
