Infant Dies from Acute Kidney Injury in Indonesia

February 6, 2023, 07.42 PM

KOMPAS.com – A one-year-old infant in Jakarta has died from atypical progressive acute kidney injury (GGAPA), the first case of the disease this year after no case was reported since early December 2022, said a health official on Monday, Feb. 6.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Health M Syahril said the Jakarta Health Agency reported two cases of GGAPA, including one suspected case.

“A confirmed case of GGAPA and a suspected case were recorded this year,” Syahril said in a statement.

The one-year infant was a patient with acute kidney failure who died on Jan. 31 after receiving treatment for several days in the hospital.

The patient first had a fever on Jan. 25 and was given Praxion syrup medicine which was bought from a pharmacy.

However, three days later, the baby had a cough, fever, and runny nose, and was unable to urinate. Then, the baby was admitted to the state-run Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta (RSCM) to receive intensive treatment and fomepizole therapy to block ethylene glycol poisoning.

The ministry previously said that acute kidney injuries affected children who consumed medicinal syrup products contaminated with hazardous chemicals ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), and ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBE).

Meanwhile, another patient with suspected GGAPA is a 7-year-old child who is currently receiving treatment at RSCM Jakarta.

Syahril said that the government is investigating causes and risk factors for acute kidney failure.

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has temporarily halted the production and distribution of Praxion syrup medicine.

Temporary suspension is carried out until the investigation is complete. BPOM has also carried out voluntary recalls or voluntary drug withdrawals.

The case investigation involves the Health Ministry, Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDI), Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), epidemiologists, Jakarta Regional Health Laboratory, professors, and National Police's Forensic Laboratory Center.

With the addition of these new cases, there are 362 cases of acute kidney failure spread across 27 provinces as of Feb. 5.

Of these, 116 cases were cured and six others are still undergoing treatment at RSCM Jakarta.
