Shin Tae-yong Remains Indonesian Head Coach until December 2023

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Shin Tae-yong will remain as head coach of the Indonesian national team until his contract ends in December this year, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) confirmed on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

“Yes, we will [keep Shin Tae-yong],” General Secretary of PSSI Yunus Nusi said.

Nusi said that Shin Tae-yong will continue to prepare the U-20 national team to compete in the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup on March 1-18 in Uzbekistan.

Shin Tae-yong is still in his home country, South Korea, following the Indonesian national team's exit in the semifinals of the 2022 AFF Cup. He is expected to return to Jakarta in early February.

Discussions on Shin Tae-yong’s future with the Indonesian national team have emerged, as the contract of the former South Korean national team in the 2018 World Cup will expire at the end of the year.

After his three years in charge, Shin Tae-yong was successful in helping the Indonesian team qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup and the U-20 2023 Asian Cup.

The 52-year-old coach has also improved the FIFA ranking of Indonesia, from 179 to 151.

However, Shin Tae-yong fell short in the Southeast football tournament, AFF Cup. He failed to bring the country to win any titles.

After progressing the team to the final in the 2020 AFF Cup, the Garuda squad, which was expected to win the tournament in the 2022 edition, was eliminated in the semifinals.
