JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday, June 30, met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to urge peace talks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that caused a food and energy crisis in developing countries.
The meeting, which took place at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow, was held a day after Jokowi held a talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
Jokowi said that he was ready to help establish contact between Zelenskyy and Putin. Jokowi had also conveyed a message from Zelenskyy to Putin but did not elaborate.

Here are the five key points of discussion from the meeting:
Humanitarian issue: “Indonesia has always been prioritizing humanitarian aspects in its foreign policy. The constitution mandates that Indonesia always tries to contribute to world peace,” Jokowi told a press conference after the meeting.
“This was the reason I visited Kyiv and Moscow.”
Peaceful settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine: Apart from a peaceful solution, Jokowi stressed the importance of embracing dialogues between both parties.
“I have relayed the message of President Zelenskyy’s message to President Putin. I am willing to be a communication bridge between the two leaders,” Jokowi said.
Food and fertilizer supplies: “I have talked about many issues and reiterated that food and fertilizers are parts of humanity. It is the interest of the people in the world,” he added.
Many people are affected by the food and fertilizer shortage, mainly in developing countries.
“I really appreciate President Putin who said earlier that he will provide a security guarantee for food and fertilizer supplies from both Russia and Ukraine. This is good news.”
“I also support the United Nations’ efforts to reintegrate Russian food and fertilizer commodities and Ukrainian food commodities to reenter the world supply chain,” he said.

Assurance on export route: And specifically for the export route for Ukrainian food products, especially through the sea route, President Putin has already given his guarantee.
Bilateral ties between Indonesia and Russia: both leaders discussed some areas of cooperation between the two nations. “We will follow up and establish a team to further discuss cooperation in the fields of investment, trade, and tourism,” Jokowi said.
Meanwhile, President Putin expressed readiness to fully meet the demand of agricultural producers in Indonesia and other friendly countries, TASS Russian news agency reported.
“We discussed the issues that are of interest to the entire world today, to all countries. I am referring to deliveries of food and other agricultural products, including mineral fertilizers, to world markets,” Putin said.

“We are ready to fully meet the demand of agricultural producers in Indonesia and other friendly countries for nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium fertilizers and raw materials for their production.”
Russia certainly intends to continue fulfilling in good faith all of our contractual obligations for the supply of food, fertilizer, energy resources, and other critical goods.
“In this context, we consider it vital to restore the supply chains disrupted by sanctions.”
Putin said that the imbalance of the world food markets is a direct consequence of the long-standing irresponsible macroeconomic policy of some states, uncontrolled issuance, and the accumulation of unsecured debt. The coronavirus pandemic further aggravated the situation.
