Many Indonesians Remain Satisfied with Government Performance: Poll
Many Indonesians remain satisfied with the government performance under the leadership of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin since October 2019, said a poll on Monday, May 3.
A survey conducted by the Kompas research and development team in April found that the level of public satisfaction with government performance stood at 69.1 percent or up 2.8 percent from 66.3 percent in January 2021.
The poll also showed that 30.9 percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction.
The survey, which was done from April 13-26 involving 1,200 respondents in all 34 provinces in Indonesia, aims to examine public satisfaction with the government since President Joko Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin took office in October 2019.
“The level of public satisfaction, in general, stood at 69.1 percent during the last survey in April. It also means that the result is not much different compared to the previous survey in January, amounting to 66.3 percent,” said Yohan Wahyu, a pollster at Kompas Research and Development team on Monday, May 3.
The survey evaluated how the people were satisfied with the government in the aspects of politics and security, law enforcement, economy, and social welfare.
The first survey in August 2020 showed that the level of public satisfaction at that time was at 65.9 percent.

The implementation of restrictions on micro-scale community activities (PPKM) has been extended to 14 days starting from May 4-17 to contain the spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia.
Besides, the government has also expanded the implementation of the restriction policy to five provinces, bringing the total number of provinces to 30.
"The five provinces comprise Riau Islands, Bengkulu, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and West Papua. So, the restrictions are now taking place in 30 provinces," said chairman of the Committee for Handling Covid-19 Airlangga Hartarto, who is also Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Monday, May 5.
South African Covid-19 Strain Found in Bali, Indonesia
Indonesia continues to be vulnerable to the Covid-19 pandemic after Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin has announced that the South African variant of the coronavirus has been found in the country.
Budi disclosed his findings to the media at a press conference on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel, following a cabinet meeting on Monday, May 3.
“The South African [Covid-19] variant has been traced in Bali,” he said.
Budi did not disclose how many cases have been found in the so-called ‘Island of the Gods.’ He added that the South African Covid-19 variant is the latest foreign strain to be found in Indonesia, following previous Covid-19 mutations from Great Britain and India.
“We have found at least two cases of the Covid-19 strain from India, both of which are reported in Jakarta, while 13 Covid-19 cases are from the variant found in Great Britain,” he noted, making for a total of 16 cases from foreign Covid-19 variants.
While Budi also did not specify whether the Covid-19 strains are of the B.1.1.7 or B.1.617 mutation, he said the variants affecting the 16 cases are ‘variants of concern’ under World Health Organization or WHO guidelines.
“The strains are ‘variants of concern’ because of their high rate of transmission. For this reason, we must take precautions when the number of these cases is still low,” he asserted.
