Jokowi Calls for Unity against Terrorism

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo urged for unity against terrorism, calling the public to remain calm and vigilant in the wake of several terror attacks this week in Indonesia.

"To the people of Indonesia, I hope all of you stay calm and maintain unity against terrorism," said Jokowi on Thursday, April 1.

Jokowi has also instructed the National Police chief, the Military (TNI) commander, and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) head to increase their vigilance.

"Let me emphasize that there is no room for terrorism in our country," said Jokowi. Previously, Indonesian police shot dead a woman who had opened fire at officers at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 31.

National Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo told a press conference yesterday that the 25-year-old woman, identified only by her initials ZA, had fired six times at officers near an entrance post to the headquarters.

ZA had asked the police on guard about the location of the post office. However, not long after being directed, ZA returned to the checkpoint and pointed a gun at several officers prompting other officers “to take decisive action.”

The "lone wolf" attack came three days after a couple carried out a suicide bombing at a Catholic church in the Indonesian city of Makassar, South Sulawesi province on Palm Sunday, wounding 20 people. The attackers detonated a bomb when they were confronted by guards outside the cathedral.
