Traveloka: Staycations the Way to Travel in 2021

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Covid-19 pandemic might hamper travel in Indonesia, as rapid tests, restrictions on movement such as Enforced Restrictions on Community Activities [PPKM] and other policies kept travelers from hitting the road in Indonesia or beyond its borders.

But a survey on vacation trends in 2021 carried out by the Traveloka travel startup shows this does not stop the public from seeking new sensations, even as the pandemic forced them to stay home.

“38 percent of our customers chose staycations as an alternative form of travel during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Traveloka Head of Corporate Communications Reza Amirul Juniarshah said to Kompas.com on Tuesday, January 26.

“Another 34 percent of respondents chose to eat out at restaurants, while only 25 percent of participants opted to travel by air.”

Reza noted that the number of respondents who were dining out reflected the public’s increasing boredom with the lockdown. He added that the coronavirus did not stop the respondents from thinking ahead.

“57 percent of the survey’s participants have made travel plans six months in advance, while another 29 percent made plans to go on vacation this month,” Reza asserted.

“35 percent said they plan to travel from the next one to three months, while 48 percent stated that they will go on holiday within three to six months.”

However, he noted that “only eight percent of respondents who made tangible plans for their travel, such as ordering transportation tickets or hotel reservations. On the other hand, 35 percent of prospective travelers admitted to monitoring holiday promos.”

Traveloka held the survey between May 28 to August 16, 2020. The company did not disclose how many people took part in the questionnaire, its nationwide scope, or margin of error.
