More Snakes Appear in Jakarta’s Residential Neighborhoods

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency members have evacuate.

“We have evacuated two pythons in Rawa Belong and Kebon Jeruk, respectively. Also, a cobra in Kalideres,” said Eko Sumarno, the agency’s operational head Wednesday, January 6.

A reptile observer and founder of the reptile enthusiasts Reptile Zone, Roni, has said this happens due to the egg-laying season from December to March.

“Starting from November to December, the snakes incubate and followed by hatching eggs from December to March,” Roni said on Wednesday.

Roni further added that the newly hatched snakes would scatter in various places, including residential areas. Also, there is a possibility of the floods be washed away by floodwaters during the rainy season.

“When the small ones hatch, they will go anywhere. Second, snakes can also enter residential areas due to flooding,” he added.

Besides, they often follow their instincts to look for mice, which are often found in residential areas.

“Third, this is the usual food factor. Snakes are predators of rats and they follow their instincts [to find mice],” he added.

Roni said it also reflects that the natural habitat of snakes is decreasing.
To prevent this, the house owners should keep their houses clean to stop mice from entering the house.

Besides, house residents should also cover drains in the bathrooms with safety measures as several types of snakes often enter the houses through the drains.

“The drains need to be covered because small snakes can fit through holes,” he said.
