JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesian tourism industry players based in Jakarta will have to scrap any New Year’s Eve 2021 celebration following a new regulation from the provincial government.

The capital city’s government, through the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, has prohibited any celebrations or programs to ring in 2021.

The decision to ax New Year's Eve 2021 celebrations in Jakarta is laid out on the Decree of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency Number 400/SE/2020.

Gumilar Ekalaya, Acting Head of the agency, confirmed the newest regulation which he signed on December 7, 2020, adding that there are five key points which the city’s tourism players that affect hotels, restaurants, and cafes.

The first point is that industry players must operate in accordance with the rules set forth in the Indonesian capital city’s transitory large-scale social restrictions (PSBB).

Second is the prohibition of New Year’s Eve 2021 celebration that carries the potential of drawing crowds.

The third point is for the internal Covid-19 Mitigation Task Force in hotels and restaurants to oversee operations by ensuring no crowds gather or disciplining guests or visitors who do not adhere to health protocols.

The fourth important point is for all tourism players in Indonesia’s capital city to respect and follow the operational hours enforced during transitory PSBB.

Lastly, the provincial government has the right to reprimand industry players who break Covid-19 health protocols.

Although New Year’s Eve 2021 celebration in Jakarta is scrapped, the provincial government still has to sort out the ongoing Covid-19 battle that has gradually worsened since November.

On December 9, the city recorded 1,237 new cases rounding out the total Covid-19 cases to 147,838.

As many as 11,660 patients are still receiving treatment or are in isolation and being treated.

Around 90.2 percent of the city’s confirmed Covid-19 patients have recovered or amounting to 133,318 patients.

Nevertheless, the capital city continues to experience high Covid-19 daily fatality rates after 18 people died on December 9 bringing the entire total to 2,860 lives lost.
