“The Covid-19 Task Force for Papua province notified us that the 58-year-old identified as VP died in Mimika General Hospital on Sunday, November 15 after he experienced chest pains,” said immigration official Whisnu Galih Priawan on Wednesday, November 18.
“He was confirmed to have died from Covid-19 on November 17 after tests carried out in the hospital came back positive for the illness.”
Whishnu added that VP was a helicopter mechanic who worked at chartered aircraft company Purawisata Baruna since he arrived in Indonesia in August 2020.
He noted that Covid-19 protocols still applied for VP even after he died. “VP’s remains are interred in a plot designated for Covid-19 cases at the cemetery in Timika in line with Covid-19 protocol on burying the dead.”
“Immigration officials, the police as well as friends and representatives of his company witnessed his funeral. We cannot repatriate [VP’s] remains [to Ukraine] because of the pandemic, but we did notify the Ukrainian embassy and his family, and they left the matter of his internment to us.”
According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 37 foreigners died of Covid-19 related causes. Of this number, 12 were confirmed to die from the coronavirus.
