JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – A Sudanese citizen allegedly attempted suicide from a pedestrian bridge over a highway in East Jakarta Monday evening, a fire and rescue official said.
“At around 23:45pm the Sudanese citizen allegedly attempted suicide by climbing a roof of the pedestrian bridge at Jagorawi toll road,” said Gatot Sulaeman, an officer from East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency Gatot Sulaeman.

The incident was discovered by a witness who spotted the man looking suspicious. The eyewitness then contacted the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency.
The firefighters reached the scene and tried to approach the Sudanese national. The officers, however, had a hard time persuading the man due to the language barrier.
“We’re dealing with the language barrier. The man does not speak English,” said Gatot on Tuesday, October 27.

The officers managed to talk him out of his precarious position, and the man finally climbed down an emergency ladder of the truck engine provided by the Fire and Rescue Team.
“The man was immediately taken to a nearby police station,” Gatot said.
The cause of the suicide attempt is still under investigation at the time of publication.
