Mitsubishi's Indonesian Arm Gearing Up for Auto Giant's Asean Expansion Bid

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Mitsubishi's authorized distributor in Indonesia Mitsubishi Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia (MMKSI) is playing a big role in the Japanese automotive giant's plan to grow its market share of over 11 percent in Southeast Asia.

“MMKSI introduced its superior products in Indonesia and they were well-received,” said President Director of MMKSI Naoya Nakamura in a statement on July 29.

“Xpander Small MPV [multi-purpose vehicle], which was introduced to the market three years ago, has become a gamechanger in its segment, while Pajero which was launched in 2009 has reached an average market share of over 40 percent,” Nakamura said.

Both Pajero Sport and Xpander are produced at the Mitsubishi plant in Indonesia for the domestic and global markets. Both of them were recognized as Indonesia's pride models.

Moreover, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. aims to strengthen its environmentally-friendly plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV) by launching new models such as SUV model, trucks, and MPV in fiscal year 2022.

Mitsubishi will introduce its Triton in 2022, followed by Xpander hybrid in the 2023. During this period and beyond, the Xpander and Pajero Sport models will also make their debut with the two new models.

MMC did not mention in detail the two latest products. However, it was reported that the brand-new model will enter the market under a collaboration with Renault and Nissan.

Previously, MMC announced its three-year business scheme from fiscal year 2020 to 2022. The plan, which is dubbed Small But Beautiful, will focus on cost-effectiveness and increasing profitability with the aim of sustainable growth.
