The Covid-19 Crisis and Its Domino Effect on Indonesia

June 27, 2020, 09.16 PM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Covid-19 pandemic is arguably one of Indonesia’s biggest crises in recent years because of its multiple effects on the nation, according to Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented domino [effect]. What started off as a health problem has turned into a social, economic, financial and political crisis,” said Sri Mulyani in a virtual discussion organized by the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) on Saturday, June 27.

The former World Bank director added that the coronavirus has done the most damage by crippling Java, Indonesia’s most populous island.

“Java is Indonesia’s economic powerhouse as it is where the provinces that contribute to the country’s gross domestic product are located,” Sri Mulyani noted.

"DKI Jakarta contributed 18 percent of Indonesia’s GDP, East Java 14.9 percent, West Java 13.4 percent, and Central Java 8.6 percent. As the provinces hardest hit by Covid-19, they reflect how a health crisis can quickly turn into an economic crisis.”

But she admitted that the rising cases go hand in hand with increased testing by the government.

“When Covid-19 struck Indonesia at the beginning of last March, the number of rapid test or PCR only stood at around 1,000 people, because the test kits are imported,” she said. “But since [Indonesia] can now produce its own test kits we can carry out 15,000 tests on a daily basis.”

Setting new records

The government announced that 1,385 new Covid-19 cases have been detected throughout Indonesia over the past 24 hours. The number shattered the previous record of 1,331 set on June 18, bringing the number of coronavirus cases to 52,812.

“We reached this number of cases following a study of 21,589 specimens,” said government Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto at a daily briefing of the crisis in Graha BNPB, Jakarta.

“The number of deaths increased by 37 to 2,720. The number of those who recovered from Covid-19 has risen by 576 to 21,909 people.”

Indonesia’s 52,812 cases are the most in ASEAN, outnumbering Singapore’s 43,246.
