Indonesia Invites US to Invest in Trans-Sumatera Toll Road

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan asked US businesses to invest in the country’s infrastructure project of the Trans-Sumatera Toll Road.

“I conveyed the message to the US to invest [in Indonesia] during a recent visit to Jakarta by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. I have told him that if the US was serious about helping [Indonesia], there are economic opportunities in the Trans-Sumatera Toll Road,” state news agency Antara quoted Luhut in Bekasi, West Java on Friday, Dec. 24.

However, Luhut did not elaborate on the specific part of the Trans-Sumatera Toll Road project that he offered to the US.

“As for the Trans-Sumatera Toll Road, Indonesian President [Joko Widodo] has instructed us to complete the project,” the senior minister said.

Luhut went on to add that the progress of some sections of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road has been seen to Betung, Medan, Parapat, and from Medan to Aceh.

Previously, state-owned construction company PT Hutama Karya (Persero) had prepared a strategy to speed up the completion of the Trans Sumatra Toll Road.

The company’s president director Budi Harto said apart from focusing on the first phase of the toll road construction, his party also accelerated the completion of designs and land acquisition for other sections.

Besides, Hutama Karya highlighted the importance of using new technology that provides more efficient performance in construction work. The company is also ready to support foreign investors, including Turkey in the construction project of Trans-Sumatra Toll Road.
