Indonesia’s New Capital Nusantara Facilities for Civil Servants to be Ready in 2024

March 27, 2023, 12.36 PM

SAMARINDA, KOMPAS.com - The supporting facilities of Indonesia’s planned new capital Nusantara (IKN) on Borneo island will be ready before the arrival of the first batch of state civil apparatuses in 2024.

"To fulfill basic needs, such as markets, schools, and hospitals, it all has been planned from the beginning, and of course will be ready as state civil apparatus move in 2024," said secretary of the Indonesian Nusantara National Capital Authority Ahmad Jaka Santos Adiwijaya in a statement on Sunday, March 26.

The government is currently preparing a mechanism for moving the state civil apparatuses to IKN, with the first batch happening in 2024, he said.

In the first phase, the total number of state civil apparatuses as well as the national defense force and police personnel transferred to the city is recorded at 16,990 people.

As part of the preparation, the government is pursuing the development of several facilities for the civil servants' convenience, such as sports centers, greenery, apartments, and lakes, he said.

Adiwijaya disclosed that the facilities have been planned for a long time ago, and are ready to get developed. Among them are an international-class hospital that will be established in the government area central core, and educational facilities by collaborating with educational institutions.

Communication and Informatics Ministry officer Farida Dewi Maharani said that moving to IKN can become a solution to reduce traffic jams in Jakarta, and population density, as well as a way to reach fair economic distribution.

She cited 2022-2022 data from Statistics Indonesia revealing that 10 million people were living in Jakarta. Moreover, West Java had 48 million people, East Java had 40 million people, Central Java had 36 million, and 11 million people lived in Banten. Yet every day, many people from those regions commute to Jakarta, she said.

Maharani said that after the new capital city is established, some 970,000 state civil apparatuses of the central government, as shown by the National Civil Service Agency data per June 2022, will be relocated. This move will reduce Jakarta's density. This figure, however, does not include the number of family members joining the civil servants.

This can mean a time to improve city planning, which includes more greenery, tech integration with all facilities, a better public transport system, and more humane public services, she said.

"I am ready to move to Nusantara City for better things, living in a much more proper environment, or at least no traffic jam; modern and comfortable residence, as well as fresher air. Moreover, state civil apparatuses are prioritized for the move. This is a sense of priority," she added.
