BARCELONA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) will transform its network with Routed Optical Networking (RON) following a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cisco.
The signing ceremony took place during the 2023 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Fira Barcelona, Spain on Monday, Feb. 27.
Through the MoU, the aforementioned transformation will pave the way for Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity in Indonesia.
The MoU between both parties will include the cultivation and development of IoT services for businesses across the country looking to deliver IoT services to their corporate customers.
This will enable new services for IoT solutions spurring digital transformation across various industries.

“IOH was born with a larger purpose to connect and empower the people of Indonesia by accelerating the nation’s digital transformation. One of Indonesia’s ambitious plans is to transform 100 cities into Smart Cities by 2045,” said President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Vikram Sinha.
Vikram went on to say that with the spirit of gotong royong, loosely translated as collaboration, the signing of the MoU is one of IOH's milestones to speed up IoT adoption within the sector.
“We believe this enhanced IoT connectivity and sustainable technologies will contribute to Indonesian industries and the nation’s digital economy growth in the future,” said Vikram.
A world that is highly connected and distributed makes people more dependent on connectivity than ever before.
In such circumstances, information technology faces challenges in providing people with optimal digital experiences wherever and whenever they need access.
Potential savings
Besides automation and IoT, with Cisco’s Routed Optical Network solution, IOH has the potential to save.
From the aspect of power efficiency, IOH could save up to 45 percent. Moreover, for the space of the equipment needed, the company could save up to 70 percent.
Sanjay Kaul, President, APJ Service Provider, Cisco said that converging the internet protocol (IP) and optical networks is the first step to the future RON which is based on open standards.
According to him, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison will benefit from higher, wavelength utilization and efficient availability from a more scalable and converged network.
“This collaboration will enable us to leverage the latest technologies and best practices to deliver world-class sustainable solutions to the people and businesses of Indonesia,” said Sanjay.

IOH and Cisco intend to extend their strategic partnership to explore mutual business cooperation concerning Cisco Jasper IoT Control Center, Network Automation, and RON.
IoT plays an important role in smart manufacturing as they help track and monitor manufacturing processes.
Besides, Network Automation and RON will improve IOH’s operational efficiencies and simplicity in serving its customers.
The collaborations will enhance business processes and deliver a new experience to IOH’s customers.
