JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s Central Bank has announced a new series design of Indonesian banknotes for circulation on Thursday, Aug.18, a day after the country celebrated its 77th Independence Day.
The new series design of banknotes are featured in the denomination of 100,000 Rupiah; 50,000 Rupiah; 20,000 Rupiah; 10,000 Rupiah; 5,000 Rupiah; 2,000 Rupiah, and 1,000 Rupiah.
The seven denominations became legal means of payment in the country, starting August 17, 2022.
“Bismillahirohmanirohim [in the name of God] as we hope for the blessing of Almighty Allah today, I, Perry Warjiyo, the governor of Bank Indonesia and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati officially issue seven denominations in 2022 as legal means of payment across Indonesia,” Perry said during a ceremony.

Similar to the 2016 edition banknotes, this year’s edition still represents images of national heroes on the front side while cultural themes, including traditional dances, natural scenery, and flora on the other side.
However, the new banknotes have sharper colors, enhanced security elements, and are more durable. These improvements aim to signify their authenticity, ensure greater convenience and safety to use as well as more counterfeit-proof. Therefore, these will provide higher quality and reliability.
“The launch of Indonesian banknotes is a concrete manifestation of our collective commitment to provide quality and reliable currency as a symbol of state sovereignty and for unifying the nation,” Perry said.
The new banknotes will be used alongside the currently circulating banknotes.
