Jokowi, Germany’s Steinmeier Discuss Economic Ties, Impacts of Russia-Ukraine War

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier held a four-eye meeting before bilateral talks during the latter’s visit to Indonesia on Thursday, June 16.

“We will continue to discuss the economic ties between the two countries,” said Jokowi.

Indonesia has expressed its commitment to enhancing its relations with Germany as the two countries commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year.

“A series of activities commemorating the 70th anniversary include contemporary art exhibitions, a collaboration with the Indonesian artists from Ruang Rupa opened by President Steinmeier,” Jokowi said.

The two leaders also discussed the bilateral issues and the ongoing situation in the world.
“I reiterate Indonesia’s offer to Germany to build a German Industrial Quarter in Indonesia,” said Jokowi.

Before, Jokowi also conveyed a similar offer to then-Chancellor Angela Merkel during a virtual meeting on April 13, 2022.

He called on President Steinmeier to develop a semi-conductor factory in Indonesia. This can be included in the global chip supply chain. Besides, Jokowi invited Germany to support the formation of energy transition financing, the carbon market in Indonesia, and cooperation in the fields of hydrogen research and electric cars.

Jokowi expressed appreciation to his counterpart for the green infrastructure initiative worth 2.5 billion euros and the construction of the world mangrove center following its recent inauguration. It includes the green transmission in North Sulawesi and a geothermal energy pilot project worth 150 million euros and 300 million euros, respectively.

“I call on Germany to be a partner in the development of new and renewable energy in Indonesia,” he added.

The two leaders also discussed the impacts of the Russia and Ukraine war.
“I also encourage the strengthening of cooperation to overcome the impacts of the Ukraine war, especially on the food and energy sector,” Jokowi said in a press statement after the bilateral talks.

He has reiterated Indonesia’s position regarding the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Indonesia is committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries. Therefore, all parties must adhere to international law and principles.

“Peace, mutual respect, and the spirit of building cooperation need to be strengthened,” Jokowi added.

Jokowi was delighted that Indonesia was among the sites of Steinmeier’s first bilateral visits after being sworn in as President recently. He will serve for another five years until 2027.

Steinmeier is on a two-day state visit from June 15-17. He is scheduled to visit the historic cultural city of Yogyakarta where he will meet with Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Yogyakarta Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, who is also the Yogyakarta governor.

President Steinmeier was in Singapore from June 13-15 before visiting Indonesia.
