JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia plans to achieve its foreign exchange earnings in the tourism sector from $470 million to $1.7 billion in 2022.
“In 2022, we target the number of foreign visitor arrival by 100 percent from 1.8 million to 3.6 million people with foreign exchange earnings of $470 million to $1.7 billion,” said Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno during the Tourism & Hospitality Industry Outlook 2022 webinar on Thursday, Jan. 20.
Previously, its foreign visitor arrival target was only 1.6 million to 1.7 million people.
Sandiaga expressed optimism to achieve the target because Indonesia will be hosting many international events, including MotoGP World Championship Grand Prix, G20, and World Conference on Creative Economy this year.
“So we will have a significant increase [in tourism revenue] because Indonesia will hold many international events,” he said.
Meanwhile, the number of targeted domestic tourists stands from 260 million to 280 million this year. The contribution of the tourism sector to gross domestic product (GDP) could reach 4.3 percent and creative product exports are expected to reach $21.3 billion.
The minister said that a glimmer of hope emerges as the enthusiasm of domestic tourists is high. Domestic tourists have become the locomotive and the driving force of the tourism and creative economy sector.
“The occupancy rate (based on the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association data) is mostly supported by domestic tourists although the length of stay is shorter and the spending is lower. But, this is one of our collaborative efforts to ensure we can get through this storm,” he added.
