PALEMBANG, KOMPAS.com – Baby with two heads, but sharing one body, was born to mother in her mid-20s in the Indonesian city of Palembang, South Sumatera health officials confirmed on Friday, Jan. 14.
The mother and newborn appear to be in good health but the baby is still receiving treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in a Palembang hospital.
A spokesperson for the Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital (RSUP) in Palembang Akhmad Suhaimi said that the baby is the child to ER (26) and AK (25).
“The mother and baby are in good health but they are still receiving treatment,” Suhaimi said.
Hospital doctor Abraham Martadiansyah who performed a cesarean section operation on his patient said that the two-head baby has a heart but shares a kidney and liver.
“The baby has only a heart but other internal organs of the body are doubled, such as kidney,” Abraham said.
The doctor explained that he is not considering the possibility of surgery because the baby only has one heart. The development of the newborn is still under observation.
“The mother is in a stable condition, while her child’s internal organs still need an intensive treatment thoroughly. We will continue to monitor the development of whether a heart can fulfill the need for oxygen or not. It is impossible to separate the two-headed baby who has only one heart.”
