KOMPAS.com – Indonesia will chair the Group of 20 (G20) for the first time in December after Italy handed over its leadership at the Rome Summit in La Nuvola on Sunday, October 31.
During the ceremony, Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi symbolically passed on the gavel to his counterpart Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
“I would like to congratulate Italy for successfully chairing the G20. Indonesia is honored to continue the G20 presidency in 2022,” the Presidential Secretariat’s website quoted President Jokowi.
He said that Indonesia will promote a collaborative effort in the world’s economic recovery under the theme “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.”
Under the leadership role of Indonesia, the Southeast Asia country is committed to promoting inclusive, people-centered, environmentally friendly, and sustainable growth.
“The G20 must be the key driver of ecosystem development in collaboration and innovation. We must continue to deepen this in our future meetings,” he explained.
Jokowi also invited the leaders of the Group of 20 major economies to continue their discussions next year in the Indonesian resort island of Bali on October 30-31.
“We will welcome you in the open air by the beautiful beach of Bali that inspires innovative ideas for the productivity of the G20 in the future. I look forward to seeing you in Indonesia. Thank you,” he said.
The year-long leadership role will officially start from December 1, 2021, to November 30, 2022, while the summit is scheduled to take place in October 2022 in Bali amid the country’s efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19.
