Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati hoped that the positive economic growth would continue in the third and fourth quarters despite the Delta variant surged in mid-June. Overall, the government projects economic growth in the range of 3.7 percent to 4.5 percent throughout this year.
If the number of Covid-19 cases can be handled at a moderate level and community activities recover, the economy could grow 4.5 percent this year. “But if this (increase in cases) persists, then the economy could go down to 3.75 percent,” Sri Mulyani said.
As of August 4, Indonesia reported 35,867 new confirmed cases, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 3.5 million since the first two cases were announced in March last year. Meanwhile, 1,747 people have died of the coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 100,636.
