Poll: Public Trust in Jokowi’s Response to Covid-19 Crisis Falls

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Public trust in the way the Covid-19 pandemic is handled by Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has dropped sharply in the past four months, according to a survey pollster.

Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI)’s director Djayadi Hanan said the trust in Jokowi’s handling of coronavirus pandemic from February to June dropped 13.5 percent to 43 percent, the lowest point throughout the pandemic.

“Public trust in Jokowi’s handling of Covid-19 pandemic in the last four months fell to 43 percent compared with 56.5 percent in the previous poll,” said Djayadi in an event held virtually on Sunday, July 18.

Djayadi revealed that the current figure is the lowest for public trust during the outbreak in the Jokowi administration.

LSI data pointed out that the public trust in Jokowi’s ability to handle the pandemic from September 2020 to June 2021 continued to decline. In September last year, the public trust stood at 60.6 percent and continued to slightly fall to 60 percent in November.

"For the first time during the Covid-19 pandemic, the public trust in President’s handling of the pandemic was below 50 percent in June,” he said, adding that this is important to understand how the programs, including the emergency Covid-19 measures, were implemented to overcome the pandemic.

The survey conducted by LSI covered 1,200 respondents across 34 provinces in the country, using a random sampling method with a margin of error of about 2.88 percent at a 95 percent confidence level.

As of today, the daily number of Covid-19 cases in the country reached 34,257, bringing the total number of infections to 2,911,733 since the first two cases were announced in March 2020. The Southeast Asia country recorded 1,338 from July 18-19, bringing the total deaths to 74,920.
