Indonesia Startup Buys TikTok's AI Tech from ByteDance

KOMPAS.com - An Indonesian online shopping startup Chilibeli is among the first clients who buy artificial-intelligence (AI) technology from the Beijing-based company of famous video-sharing app TikTok, ByteDance, through one of its new units called BytePlus, Financial Times reported.   

Other customers include the US-based fashion startup Goat, Singapore-based online travel company WeGo, and an Indian gaming-based social media platform called GamesApp, according to the company's website.

ByteDance through its new unit BytePlus will provide an opportunity for the aforementioned companies to try out its AI technology, one of which is the TikTok algorithm used in their platform. The TikTok algorithm is one of the main drivers of TikTok's success in gaining popularity.

The AI technologies offered by BytePlus are BytePlus Recommend, BytePlus Translation, and BytePlus Effects.

BytePlus Recommend is used for implementing TikTok's recommendation features, such as For You Page (FYP), into each partner's partner platform. Then, BytePlus Translation is a technology that can be used to translate text dynamically. Lastly, BytePlus Effects is a technology that allows partner companies to embed various TikTok video effects in real-time, if their application has a video recording feature.

Besides the AI technology, BytePlus also offers some tools to make it easier for its partners to process data.

At the time of publication, no official statement was issued by ByteDance on its Project BytePlus and its future mission. However, information regarding the ByteDance subsidiary, the technology offered, and several companies that have become partners can be seen on the BytePlus.com page.
