Indonesian National Police Identifies Assailant of Police Headquarters in Jakarta

The Indonesian National Police has identified a woman who carried out a lone wolf attack on their headquarters in South Jakarta on Wednesday evening as ZA, a third year dropout student from an undisclosed university in the capital.

“We identified ZA during an autopsy of her remains at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta,” said the Hospital’s deputy chairman Police Grand Commissioner [Kombes] Umar Shahab.

“The coroner ruled that her cause of death to be a shot to the heart, after she fired at the police six times during her solo attack on [National Police Headquarters]. She was then interred at Pondok Ranggon cemetery in the early hours of Thursday, April 1, with no relatives to mourn her.”

The police suspected ZA of attempting to assassinate Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, as she fired at a guard post outside his offices in the National Police headquarters, before she was shot and killed by a firearm fired at long distance.

The incident occurred just a days after the National Police conducted nationwide raids against suspected terrorists in the wake of a suicide bombing in the Indonesian city of Makassar on South Sulawesi province Sunday, March 28.

Indonesian Police Arrest Dozens Over Makassar Cathedral Bombing

The Indonesian National Police has arrested 23 people in connection with a suicide blast at a Catholic cathedral in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province last Sunday, which killed the two suicide bombers and wounded 20 churchgoers and security guards.

“Investigators arrested 13 people in Makassar, for their involvement in the blast,” Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 31.

“One of them is an individual identified as W, whom we suspect to be the mastermind of the bombing. The arrests bring the number of people we detained in the wake of the bombings to 23, after we arrested ten others in Jakarta and the nearby city of Bekasi, West Java, as well as Bima, West Nusa Tenggara [NTB] province.”

Listyo added that the investigation of the bombing is still ongoing as the police, specifically the Densus 88 or Detachment 88 counterterrorist unit, continue to develop their case.

The police identified the suicide bombers as L and his wife YSF. The police confiscated five live bombs and bombmaking materials like sulphur, black powder and hydrogen peroxide in the Jakarta and Bekasi raids.

The two, and their accomplices in Makassar, Jakarta and Bima are known to be part of the Jamaah Anshor Daulat [JAD] terrorist network. Prior to the Makassar cathedral attack, JAD was implicated in a number of attacks in Indonesia and the Philippines.

These include a series of bombings in Surabaya, East Java which killed 28 people in 2018, as well as a suicide blast at a cathedral in the southern Philippine city of Jolo the next year which killed 20 people, including the two attackers.

Indonesian Air Crash Investigators Find the Black Box of Sriwijaya Air Flight SJ182

The Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee [KNKT] has found the cockpit voice recorder [CVR] of Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182, which crashed near the Thousand Islands off Jakarta last January.

KNKT chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono announced that investigators found the black box on Tuesday evening, March 30, near where the Boeing 737-500 went down.

“We used a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger [TSHD] vessel, the King Arthur 8, to suck mud from the seabed, ” he said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“We settled our search on a muddy, 90 by 90 meter area near where we found the flight’s flight data recorder [FDR],” he added. “The KNKT will then match the transcript with the data from the Flight Data Recorder [FDR], that was found three days after the crash on January 9.”

Sriwijaya Air Flight SJ182 crashed between the Laki and Lancang Island in the Thousand Islands chain, minutes after it took off from Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta International Airport to head to Pontianak, West Kalimantan province on Saturday, January 9.

The Boeing 737-500 jet carried 62 people. None of them survived the disaster.
