Jakarta’s Governor Dissuades Public From Traveling on Chinese New Year

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has dissuaded the public from hitting the road during the Chinese New Year weekend, a bit over a month after Covid-19 cases surged after holidaygoers traveled on the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

“I urge the [Jakarta] public to stay at home, as the number of Covid-19 cases remain high,” he said on Tuesday, February 9.

“Traveling can bring about the transmission of Covid-19 anytime, anywhere. If we are in a car with a relative who is exposed to the coronavirus or already contracted it for five to seven hours, then we are all at risk of contracting Covid-19.”

The Gerindra party politician called on the public to stay at home during the long weekends to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission. Jakarta is currently carrying out micro-scale social activities or PPKM, along with other provinces in Java as well as Bali until February 22.

Jakarta has seen 3,437 new Covid-19 cases over on February 9 to bring up the total number of 300,406. The coronavirus also killed 4,681 Jakartans.
