JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – A 45-year-old Japanese national who contracted Covid-19 was found dead while in self-isolation in an apartment building in Central Jakarta on Monday, February 8.

“I could confirm that we found the body of the Japanese national. It started when Sawah Besar sub-precinct police station received information that the somebody had died in the apartment,” said Police Chief Inspector (AKP) Maulana Mukarom, Sawah Besar Police head, said on Tuesday, February 9.

Before he died, the Japanese national who worked as a restaurant manager had contacted his friend, saying that he experienced difficulty breathing. However, upon arrival at the apartment, the friend found that the Japanese national had died.

“Sawah Besar sub-precinct police station then immediately coordinated with the Covid-19 Task Force team to evacuate the body using the Covid-19 protocols,” Maulana said.

The police also contacted the Embassy of Japan for taking the necessary actions such as contacting the victim’s family in Japan.

“His family members were already aware of the situation and the victim’s sickness as he was self-isolating in the apartment,” said Maulana.

He added that the police investigated why the victim was choosing self-isolation rather than receiving treatment in the hospital.
