JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has ordered the imposition of limited area quarantines as the number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia surged past one million to stand at 1,024,298 as of Wednesday, January 27.
“President Jokowi urged the cabinet to consider applying area quarantines down to the neighborhood or ward levels [RT/RW] to further limit the spread of Covid-19,” said Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy in a press release on Wednesday, January 27.
"The limited quarantine is carried out to focus on Covid-19 cases in a certain area by having them isolate individually or collectively. We are still trying to determine how to carry this measure out.”

Muhadjir added that the limited quarantines should be integrated with other measures against Covid-19, among them the 3T health protocols of tracing, tracking and testing, as well as medical treatment of Covid-19 cases.
“Other measures that we are carrying out during the surge of Covid-19 cases are increased allocation of beds for coronavirus patients in hospitals. This is a factor that the majority of [Indonesian] hospitals have yet to achieve.”

The Worldometers website noted that Indonesia has the fourth highest number of Covid-19 cases in Asia as of Tuesday, January 26. Only India, Turkey, and Iran has more coronavirus cases with 10,677,710, 2,435254, 1,379,286 respectively.
Indonesian reached more than one million Covid-19 cases, 10 months after the pandemic was detected in the country on March 2020. The pandemic have claimed 28,855 Indonesian lives, while 831,330 of cases recovered from the coronavirus.
