KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir has affirmed the country's readiness to become a major player in the electric vehicle battery industry.

Erick said that he will have a meeting with the US automaker Tesla representatives next month to further discuss possible cooperation in the electric vehicle industry.

Meanwhile, 900 units of houses belong to villagers in the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara have been renovated for homestays in support of the Mandalika MotoGP in 2021.

The total budget for the renovation program reaches 62.23 billion rupiahs ($4.3 million).

1. Indonesia Ready to Become Major Player in the Electric Vehicle Industry: Minister

Indonesia’s State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir has affirmed the country's readiness to become a major player in the electric vehicle battery industry.

To achieve the goal, Erick ordered the state electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to improve its services and change the business strategy.

“Alhamdulillah [Praise be to God], PLN is on the right track and it has also participated in the BUMN consortium in collaboration with companies from Korea and China to produce electric vehicle battery,” Erick said in a statement on Saturday, January 2.

“Insya Allah [God willing] I will have a meeting with Tesla [the US automaker] in February to further discuss this cooperation,” he said during an event to test drive an electric vehicle in Bali.

About 900 units of houses belong to villagers in the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara have been renovated for homestays in support of the Mandalika MotoGP in 2021.

The construction of the houses that requires to meet the standards for tourist accommodation is almost complete now.

“In 2020, we have promoted several programs, including the homestay program in Central and North Lombok. The progress of the construction work has reached 97 percent completion,” said H Suryadi Jaya Purnama, member of House Commission V overseeing infrastructure and transportation on Saturday, January 2.

Suryadi said that the renovation program is carried out by the Public Works and Housing Ministry under its Independent Housing Stimulus Assistance (BSPS) Program.

The renovation program in Lombok was meant to upgrade the villager’s houses so that the structure of their houses shall be in a good and safe condition for the tourists to stay.

Meanwhile, the funds disbursed for this program ranging from 35 million rupiahs ($2,463) to 115 million rupiahs ($8,093). The total budget for the renovation program reaches 62.23 billion rupiahs ($4.3 million).

“The goal is that to provide accommodation for the tourists visiting Lombok and to bring economic benefits to the community,” he said.

3. Jakarta Extends Transitional Partial Lockdown until January 17

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has extended the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), or also known as partial lockdown by another 14 days until January 17 during the transition period.

The partial lockdown will begin on January 4 according to the Governor Decree (KepGub) No. 1295/2020.

“Based on the recommendations from BNPB [Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency] and FKM UI [University of Indonesia’s School of Public Health], we decided to extend the PSBB in the transition period until January 17,” Anies said in a statement on Sunday, January 3.
