Indonesia Highlights: Indonesia Officially Disbands the FPI | Indonesia Receives Additional 1.8 Million Vaccines From Sinovac | Jakarta Prepares Facilities for Mass Vaccinations

December 31, 2020, 05.27 AM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has succeeded what his predecessors failed to do by disbanding the FPI.

Best known for using Islam as a reason to terrorizing political opponents and sweeps on private businesses, the group and its notorious head Rizieq Shihab were undone after falling foul of Covid-19 health protocols and forgetting to extend their organizational permit, which expired in 2020.

Indonesia will receive 1.8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from Sinovac, two weeks after the country received the first batch of 1.2 million vaccines from the Chinese pharmaceutical company.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said the doses will be the first of more to come, after the government inked deals with Astra Zeneca and Novavax to procure more vaccines from both companies.

And Jakarta is leading the way in preparing for the vaccines in Indonesia, after Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan ordered the building of facilities to prepare for mass inoculation of the Covid-19 vaccines.

Indonesia Officially Disbands the FPI

The Indonesian government disbanded the Islamic Defenders Front ( FPI) on Wednesday, December 30, phasing out the group’s 22-year existence. The move culminated weeks of tensions following the return of its exiled chief Rizieq Shihab from Saudi Arabia last November.

“The government has disbanded FPI and will stop its activities in the future because it no longer has any legal standing as an organization,” said Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD.

Mahfud added that the ban was based on a joint ministerial decree ( SKB) issued by six officials. They included Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Legal Affairs and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly, and Indonesian National Police Chief General Idham Aziz.

The decree stated that “[The FPI] is forbidden to carry out activities or show its symbols and other attributes in Indonesia. Law enforcement will disband any activities that are held by them.”

The government noted that the FPI is not registered as an organization, as they failed to extend their organizational registration permit after it expired on June 20, 2019.

Mahfud noted that the FPI has been disturbing the peace by sweeps, intimidation and other forms of violence. He pointed out that the FPI opposed the Pancasila state ideology, while 35 of its members were suspected of complicity in terrorism, among them pledging allegiance to ISIS.

Indonesia Receives Additional 1.8 Million Vaccines From Sinovac

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi announced that Indonesia will receive 1.8 million Covid-19 vaccines from Sinovac, two weeks after the Chinese pharmaceutical company sent 1.2 million doses of the vaccine to the country.

Retno highlighted the move after she and Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin witnessed state owned Indonesian pharmaceutical companies Bio Farma and Indo Farma strike deals to buy 50 million vaccines from their foreign counterparts Astra Zeneca and Novavax.

She added that the securing of the vaccines are due to “the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ ‘multiple track diplomacy’.

These include bilateral diplomacy to secure supplies from pharmaceutical companies as well as multilateral diplomacy with the WHO, GAVI and other initiatives.”

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin agreed with Retno. “The 50 million doses of the [Covid-19] vaccine from Astra Zeneca and Novavax will give the public room to choose the vaccine that is best suited for them,” he said.

The government has procured 371 million Covid-19 vaccines through 2022. The authorities aim to inoculate at least 181 million Indonesians to achieve herd immunity against Covid-19.
