KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy officially has a new leader following Sandiaga Uno’s oath ceremony.
What the coronavirus pandemic has made very clear to Indonesia’s tourism industry players and the new minister is that it will be a massive challenge to triumph during the global health crisis.
During his ceremony, Sandiaga Uno highlighted three important points regarding his leadership at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

1. Health takes priority
Implementing Covid-19 health protocols is the top priority for the former Vice-Governor of Jakarta throughout the duration of the pandemic.
“We must seriously put into a force stringent health protocols. I would like to remind everyone of the importance of the ‘3M’ program.”
Sandiaga further underlined the importance of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environment (CHSE) program for Indonesia’s tourism industry.
“We need to make certain that we can tackle the health side of things before we can consider reviving other sectors of the economy, particularly in tourism and creative economy."

To steer Indonesia’s tourism industry to success, the former vice-presidential candidate highlighted the importance of collaboration in regards to development matters, the economy, and tourism itself.
Sandi’s hope for Wishnutama
Despite getting the boot, his predecessor Wishnutama Kusubandio remains cordial with the new Tourism Minister.
Sandiaga expressed his hope for Wishnutama to maintain his presence in Indonesia’s tourism industry and the creative economy in addition to serving as a mentor to the ministry for crucial events.
A message from Jokowi-Ma’ruf
In his speech during the oath ceremony, Sandiaga Uno relayed the message by Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo and the Vice-President, Ma’ruf Amin.
One of the President’s message was that the new chief of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will be given one year to refocus on the five super-priority destinations.

Other agendas on Sandiaga’s to-do list encompasses a Calendar of Events and innovative tourism products to launch in 2021.
“The Vice-President asserted the importance of implementing Covid protocols within Indonesia’s tourism industry. He added that the creative economy sector is a key engine of our economy which creates job opportunities thus must be approached holistically.”
Sandiaga Uno acknowledged that there is not much time to draw up a plan and strategy, but he is confident that with adaptation, innovation, and collaboration to deliver the best to society and country.
