BANDUNG, KOMPAS.com – The potential hazards of road travel in Indonesia is highlighted once again, after a multiple collision on the Trans-Java toll road killed 10 people and wounded two others.
The police said the accident occurred on the Cipali leg of the toll road in Central Java’s Purwakarta Regency on the early hours of Monday, 30 November.
“The accident occurred when an 18-wheeler crashed into a semi which broke down earlier, but did not pull over properly to the side of the road,” said Police Chief Commissioner Eddy Djunaedi of the West Java Regional Police Traffic Directorate.
“A Mitsubishi Elf travel van from Jakarta heading to Cirebon, West Java then collided with the second truck. The accident killed eight people on the spot, while two others died on arrival at the hospital.” He added that the fatalities and two others who were injured were from the Elf.
Eddy added that the police are carrying out further investigations of the mishap by going through evidence via the Traffic Accident Analysis [TAA], as well as interrogations.
Fatal traffic accidents are a common occurrence in Indonesia, particularly during the Eid holiday season when thousands of homebound holidaymakers hit the roads.
Poor vehicle maintenance, trucks carrying cargo exceeding their maximum load, and reckless driving as well as fatigue are also other known factors.
