Foreign Investors Welcome Improved Regulation in Indonesia, Says Top Diplomat

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian government’s decision to improve the investment climate by promoting effective regulation and bureaucracy has been well received by foreign investors.

Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi made this observation after accompanying President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the World Economic Forum (WEF) virtual event on Wednesday, November 25.

“The foreign private sector welcomes the development of regulation and bureaucracy done by the government of Indonesia,” Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a video broadcast via the Presidential Secretariat’s official YouTube channel.

Minister Retno said President Jokowi and the investors discussed various issues including the ease of doing business in Indonesia. During the discussion, they expressed enthusiasm to invest in the digital sector.

She further added that foreign investors also look forward to collaborating with Indonesian investors and micro small medium enterprises (MSME) entrepreneurs.

They also support Indonesia’s commitment to continue to balance economic development with environmental sustainability, Retno said.

“The CEOs show enthusiasm and appreciate the reform implemented by Indonesia,” Retno said, adding that they also lauded how Indonesia handles the pandemic.

Meanwhile, during the forum President Jokowi promoted the ease of doing business in the country following the signing of Law No. 11/2020 on Job Creation. This aims to give a better understanding of the government’s efforts in creating a friendly investment ecosystem for investors.

“The enactment of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation is our big step to facilitate business permits and provide legal certainty, as well as provide incentives to attract investment, especially for the labor-intensive industries and digital economy,” Jokowi said in a statement.
