Indonesia, South Korea Discuss Covid-19 Handling, Migrant Workers Protection

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani met with South Korea’s National Assembly Deputy Speaker Kim Sang-hee in the Parliament Building in Senayan, Jakarta on Wednesday, November 25.

During the meeting, Puan and Kim discussed, among other, issues on handling the Covid-19 pandemic and protection for Indonesian migrant workers in South Korea.

“I hope this visit can further strengthen the relations between the two countries that bring more benefits for the people of the two nations,” Puan said in a statement on Wednesday.
She also expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the South Korean government in handling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Puan also hoped that the cooperation in the area of research and development of the Covid-19 vaccine will be strengthened.

“I would like to invite various parties in South Korea to work together with their partners in Indonesia such as in the field of medical innovative devices,” he said.

Besides, Puan also promoted Indonesia as the potential destination for South Korea’s investment by inviting Korean companies to invest in Indonesia.

“Indonesia always makes improvements in its investment climate. I hope the Korean parliament will help us to encourage Korean companies to invest in Indonesia,” Puan said.
Meanwhile, in the meeting, Puan also called for support from the South Korean parliament to increase the protection of Indonesian migrant workers. So far, there are about 33,000 Indonesian migrant workers in South Korea.

“I hope that the Korean Parliament will continue to improve the country's protection for Indonesian migrant workers in Korea,” she said.

She added that Indonesia’s parliament has established a bilateral friendship group with 102 parliaments across the globe, including South Korea. She hoped that this bilateral forum will help achieve various development goals through the exchange of information on the role and function of each country's parliament.
