Doing so is of considerable importance in a Balinese village where nearly 80 percent of its locals or 1,020 people rely on tourism.
The village shot to fame after it was anointed as a model village attraction in Indonesia, for which it has also won the Kalpataru Award.
In 2016, the village in Bali was selected as the third-cleanest village in the world, according to the international magazine Boombastic.

Later in 2017, Penglipuran Village received the Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Award in the Culture Preservation category.
