The arrests comes after the police detained a number of activists from the Save Indonesia Coalition (KAMI) for protesting against the Omnibus Jobs Law in Jakarta and Medan.

“[Our investigations found that] KAMI stalwarts Anton Permana, Syahganda Nainggolan, Jumhur Hidayat, as well as DW and KA, contributed to the [riots] by posting inflammatory content,” said police spokesman Brigadier General Awi Setiyono on October 16.

“Their postings used tribal, religious and racial sentiments, as well as hoaxes, to allow the demonstrations to descend into anarchy and vandalism.

The Jobs Creation Omnibus Law sparked protests throughout Indonesia for allegedly undermining workers' rights and pandering to foreign investors.

Critics of the Electronic Information and Transaction Law also voiced concerns over its use by the powerful to shut down dissent.
