October 4, 2020, 12.30 AM

KOMPAS.com – Two Indonesian nationals living in South Korea and one in Kuwait have contracted the coronavirus recently, bringing the total number of Indonesians infected overseas to 1,550 as of October 3, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed.

“Yes, it's true that 1,550 people including the new confirmed cases have tested positive for Covid-19 abroad,” a spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Teuku Faizasyah, told Kompas.com on Saturday.

Of this number, 1,116 have recovered, 312 are being treated, and 112 people have died.

He also said three Indonesian patients have recently recovered in South Korea.

Faizasyah explained that the Covid-19 data abroad was obtained in various ways as health information in foreign countries was not easy to get.

“Health information is undisclosed and developed countries usually require patient’s consent before releasing the information,” said the former Indonesian Ambassador to Canada.

“The information was collected from the patients directly, their family or acquaintances, and also the third party,” he added.

Faizasyah said the Indonesian government abroad provides assistance with a different approach, depending on the country.

“We follow the conditions and regulations of each country. But at least the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate will monitor the condition of the citizens once they are identified,” he said.
Besides, he added, the government representatives also provide quarantine facilities in certain cases.
