Jakarta Administration Secretary Saefullah Dies after Contracting Covid-19

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Jakarta Administration Secretary Saefullah passed away on Wednesday, September 16 at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital where he was treated for two days due to Covid-19. He was 56.

“He passed away at 12:55pm [local time] at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital,” Jakarta Employment Agency head Chaidir told Kompas.com on Wednesday, September 16.

Born in Jakarta on February 11, 1964, Saefullah began to serve as Jakarta Administration Secretary on July 11, 2014. As the City Administration secretary, he worked under the leadership of four Jakarta Governors starting from Joko Widodo to Basuki Tjahaya Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat to Anies Baswedan. Before that, he served as Central Jakarta mayor and occupied other posts in the Jakarta Administration.

He is survived by his wife and their four children.

It was previously reported that Saefullah received treatment at the hospital after he contracted Covid-19.

Anies confirmed that Saefullah and West Jakarta Mayor Uus Kusmanto contracted Covid-19. Both patients were classified as people without Covid-19 symptoms.

This was said on September 14 as Jakarta began to reimpose partial lockdown in the Indonesian capital due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases. At the time, Anies called on Jakarta residents to pray for the recovery of the two officials. “We hope for their speedy recovery,” Anies earlier said, adding that both of them had no Covid-19 symptoms.
