State Bank BNI to Pave Way for Indonesian Businesses' Expansion in Hong Kong

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – State bank PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk is keen to facilitate Indonesian entrepreneurs' business expansion in Hong Kong through its overseas branch office.

The initiative aims to bridge the connection between business owners in Indonesia and the world as many Indonesian companies have established a trading arm in Hong Kong.

“BNI invites Indonesian companies to expand their businesses in Hong Kong. BNI will finance the import and export activities,” Wan Andi Aryadi, head of the BNI branch office in Hong Kong, said in a statement received by Kompas.com on July 28.

“BNI in Indonesia will finance the parent company, while its trading arms will be funded by the bank’s branch office in Hong Kong,” Wan Andi added.

He explained that Hong Kong plays a vital role for Indonesian entrepreneurs to do business in China because it has become a global economic powerhouse. Indonesian entrepreneurs who plan to expand their businesses in China usually set up a business arm in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a business-friendly economy that provides various facilities and legal certainty for entrepreneurs to do business. The Hong Kong government provides a tax-free policy for the export and import of goods to and from Hong Kong.

“This policy makes business owners open their companies in Hong Kong to import goods and then export them to other countries,” said Wan Andi.

Banking services to migrant workers

Meanwhile, BNI in Hong Kong has been providing banking services to many Indonesian migrant workers, said Wan Andi. Currently, data shows around 150,000 Indonesians working in Hong Kong. Of this number, 50,000 people have bank accounts in BNI.

“Of the 1,300 new bank accounts last month, 650 account holders are migrant workers. They contribute to almost half of the opening of the new accounts,” he said.

As of June this year, BNI in Hong Kong recorded a total of 67,000 bank accounts. In a month, the bank recorded more than 1,000 new account holders.
